July 26, 2010 - Corpse Flower Lois
Lois is now gone, but Jim was able to capture photos of the corpse flower in its rare blooming phase. Pictured is Houston Museum of Natural Science horticulturist Zac Stayton examining and photographing the flower. More of Jim's corpse flower images can be seen here.

"Most of these flowers seem to produce a bloom for the first time when they are about 7 years old, and/or when the tuber has reached about 30 pounds in weight. The tuber can get as big as 200 pounds!
They don’t bloom all that often, but one plant can bloom several times (probably not in consecutive years though) during its lifetime. No-one seems to know what stimulates a given plant to bloom – so you don’t know until the spike is up and starting to open whether it is the leaf or the inflorescence."

Sargassum seaweed

Band of oil from Galveston's 1990 Shinoussa oil spill

July 20, 2010 - Galveston Bay UPDATE
Ellis Pickett, founder of The Texas Surfrider Foundation and the Texas representative for the Gulf Restoration Network went to San Luis Pass where the patches of Sargassum were spotted. To everybody's relief, his findings confirmed that there was no oil in the seaweed.

July 20, 2010 - After the storm
After a rain filled evening, the clouds finally broke near sunset and cleared out enough for some great new skyline shots!

July 19, 2010 - Galveston Bay / San Luis Pass
LightHawk pilot Randy Henry flew me and environmental activist Sharron Stewart on an aerial coastal shoot looking for oil that had recently been reported off the Texas coast. As we flew over Christmas Bay and approached San Luis Pass, we were stunned to see what appeared to be moussed oil drifting into and through the Pass. I have shot numerous oil spills on the Texas coast in my career, and boy, did it look like oil. To get another perspective we flew along the beach where the 'oil' was washing ashore and , to our relief,we identified it as Sargassum seaweed covering the sand, not oil. It's possible the sightings off Bolivar Penisula were actually Sargassum as well, hopefully! Sharron is going to go down to the beach tomorrow and see if there is any oil in the seaweed, let us hope there is none.

July 12, 2010 - World Cup festivities in Texas
